In the summer of 1982, former DC Mayor Marion Barry and his staff launched a media campaign to boost the DC tourism industry and do for Washington what the "I Love New York" campaign did for New York City.
It was called "Washington is a Capital City," and the campaign produced hundreds of thousands of bumper stickers and buttons with this very slogan.
It also produced a funny radio jingle that went like this: "It's cool, it's hot, it's got what you want. It swings, it's fun, it's the big number one. It's a CA-PI-TAL CI-TY. It's Washington!"
